What is an ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)?
Many people choose SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) or LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) to get rid of the hassle of wearing glasses or contact lenses. However, these may not be suitable for those with myopia over a thousand degrees or those with insufficient corneal thickness. For those who wish to eliminate high myopia, the Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is another option. ICL is a custom-made soft lens that effectively corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, restoring 90% of vision within 24 hours.
The Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is designed for patients with high myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The procedure does not require corneal ablation. It uses non-laser principles, innovative technology, and biocompatible, soft, UV-protective lens material to correct high myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The vision correction process with ICL: After the preoperative examination, the doctor first administers anaesthetic eye drops to the patient, then makes a small incision of about 2-3 millimeters in the cornea. The doctor then inserts and positions the folded lens into the eye, much like inserting a contact lens, to achieve the effect of vision correction. The procedure typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes, does not require stitches, and generally restores 90% of vision by the second day after the procedure.
- ICL is a "reversible procedure", in principle, the lens can be removed or replaced, and it does not change the shape and structure of the eye.
- The procedure takes approximately 5-10 minutes, or even less, and most people are able to resume everyday activities within a few days after the surgery.
- After recovery, activities such as swimming or diving will not be affected, making it particularly suitable for professional athletes or members of the disciplined services.
- ICL can correct up to -1800 degrees of myopia (nearsightedness), +1000 degrees of hyperopia (farsightedness), and 600 degrees of astigmatism.
An ophthalmologist will first administer anaesthetic eye drops to the patient, then insert the ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) between the iris and the lens through a small corneal incision. The ICL placement takes approximately 5-10 minutes and does not require hospitalization.
We recommend having someone accompany you home to rest. The ophthalmologist will prescribe eye drops or oral medication for you. You will need to return for postoperative check-ups approximately on the first day, the seventh day, one month, three months, and six months after the ICL procedure.
Since the ICL procedure does not involve removing tissue from the cornea, it is more suitable for patients with high refractive errors, thin/irregular corneas, or dry eyes.
Generally speaking, you are a suitable candidate for ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) if you meet the following conditions:
- Age between 21 and 45 years old
- Not a suitable candidate for LASIK / SMILE (those with severe myopia, thin / irregular corneas, severe dry eye disease)
- Refractive error has been stable for the past 12 months
- No eye diseases (such as iritis or glaucoma)
- Not pregnant
ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) Preoperative Examination
Takes approximately 1-2 hours
The examination includes:
- Best vision and refractive error of the eyes
- Corneal curvature, shape, and thickness checked with a corneal topographer
- Cornea, anterior chamber, and lens examined under a microscope
- Pupil dilation for a retinal examination
- Artificial lens measurement with a lensmeter
- Corneal endothelial cell check
After pupil dilation:
- Near vision will become blurry
- Mild photophobia may occur
- Please bring sunglasses
- Do not drive
- The effect of pupil dilation will disappear after approximately 4 hours
