【Pain Relief Academy】Shoulder and Neck Pain and Stiffness? It’s Not Always Just Your Sitting Posture! Common Causes + 3 Self-Relief Tips
At work, you’re staring at a computer; after work, you’re hunched over your phone. Do you often feel your neck is “stiff” and your shoulders feel like they’re carrying several kilograms? Even turning your head feels tight and painful? When many people experience pain, they simply rub it a bit or stick on a pain-relief patch. But shoulder and neck pain can have more than one cause. Without understanding the cause, vigorous massage, stretching, or even “neck cracking” may not help—and could make the discomfort worse?
In this video, registered physiotherapist Susan Wan explains the common causes of shoulder and neck pain and shares three everyday ways to relieve it!
Shoulder and neck pain may be related to the following factors :
- Prolonged head-down posture or staying in the same position: Leaning your head forward to look at a screen or hunching your shoulders while typing keeps the shoulder and neck muscles under strain for long periods, making them tired and tight.
- Cervical spine or disc-related problems: If the pain is not just in the shoulder and neck but also travels down the arm, or if you experience numbness or tingling in your fingers, a nerve may be irritated. Don’t dismiss it as ordinary muscle fatigue.
- A sudden “stiff neck”: If you wake up with a painful, stiff neck and find it difficult to turn your head, it may be related to your neck being kept in an uncomfortable position for a long time while sleeping.
If shoulder and neck pain keeps recurring, affects your sleep or work, or the pain travels down your arm with numbness or tingling, seek medical assessment as soon as possible. If you experience new or worsening weakness in the arms or legs, unsteady walking, or severe headaches, seek medical attention promptly.
To improve shoulder and neck pain, don’t just endure it—first understand the cause, then manage it with methods that suit you. ✨
